Ghanaian boxer Shakul Samed has been suspended by the Commonwealth Games Federation after being found positive for consuming a banned drug.

He was found positive on the dope test on the very first day of the competition.

A drug called furosemide was found in his sample. It is a drug that is used to treat kidney disorders, heart diseases, and liver diseases.

It can be taken either through injection or directly. This medicine is also used to treat patients with high blood pressure.

An official statement from the Commonwealth Games Federation said that a banned substance (diuretic and masking agent furosemide) was found in his sample.

Due to this, he has been suspended with immediate effect. He and the Ghana Commonwealth Games Association have been informed about this.

However, before taking a decision on his future, another sample of him will be taken. He will get a chance to present his side before any decision on him.

Light heavyweight boxer Samed would open his campaign against Mauritius boxer Luc Jean Rosalba on 29 July. After being suspended, his opponent got a walkover.

The Commonwealth Games Federation has called for zero tolerance for doping.

It said in the statement that ‘we seek to maintain the integrity of the Commonwealth Games by running a comprehensive anti-doping program that focuses equally on education, prevention, and testing.

The Indian team performed very well on the first day of the Commonwealth Games.
