India Boosts Night Combat Power: ₹659 Crore ‘Night Sight’ Deal Enhances Army’s Strike Range to 500 Meters
India Boosts Night Combat Power: India signs a ₹659.47 crore contract for advanced ‘Night Sight’ systems for SIG 716 rifles, enhancing night combat capability up to 500 meters. The move marks a major push for indigenous defense manufacturing alongside DRDO’s new parachute success and naval research vessel launch.
In a major stride towards strengthening India’s night warfare capabilities, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract worth ₹659.47 crore for the procurement of advanced ‘Night Sights’ (image intensifiers) and other accessories for the 7.62×51 mm SIG 716 assault rifle used by the Indian Army.
These Night Sights will empower soldiers to engage enemy targets effectively at ranges up to 500 meters, even in near-total darkness. The agreement was formalized on Wednesday with M/s MKU Limited and M/s Medbit Technologies Private Limited, marking a crucial milestone in India’s journey toward self-reliance in defense technology.
Night Sight Features and Advantages: India Boosts Night Combat Power
According to the Ministry, the newly procured Night Sights represent a significant upgrade over the existing Passive Night Sights (PNS). These next-generation image intensifiers can perform under starlight conditions and are designed to operate with high precision and clarity.
The procurement falls under the Indian-IDDM (Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured) category, ensuring that over 51% of the content is locally sourced. This initiative not only enhances the Army’s tactical edge but also boosts India’s Make in India mission by promoting domestic manufacturing and technology development.
Officials confirmed that this project will generate widespread benefits for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) involved in producing components, optics, and raw materials—further reinforcing India’s growing defense industrial base.
Thales Contract for Lightweight Modular Missile (LMM)
In another significant development, the Indian Army’s Air Defense Corps signed a contract with Thales, a British defense firm, for the acquisition of the Lightweight Modular Missile (LMM) system.
The LMM is a portable, shoulder-launched missile that operates on the laser beam riding principle. It is designed to counter a variety of aerial threats such as offensive aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, and UCAVs, with a striking range of over six kilometers. The system’s ability to perform efficiently in all weather conditions and high-altitude terrains makes it a game-changer for India’s tactical defense capabilities.
DRDO’s Indigenous Combat Parachute System Success: India Boosts Night Combat Power
Adding to the nation’s defense achievements, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully tested the Military Combat Parachute System (MCPS) at an altitude of 32,000 feet.
This indigenous system, once inducted, will replace imported parachutes, providing the armed forces with home-grown, reliable, and cost-effective alternatives. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh praised the DRDO, armed forces, and industry partners for this milestone, calling it “a remarkable step toward India’s self-reliance in critical defense technologies.”
Construction Begins on Advanced Research Vessel
Meanwhile, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Limited has launched the construction of an Advanced Acoustic Research Vessel (ARS) for the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), a unit of the DRDO.
The vessel, measuring 93 meters in length and 18 meters in width, will be equipped with cutting-edge research and acoustic analysis tools. Once completed, it will significantly enhance India’s maritime research and surveillance capabilities.
A Leap Toward Atmanirbhar Bharat in Defense: India Boosts Night Combat Power:
From advanced Night Sights to missile systems, parachute innovations, and naval research infrastructure, these developments underline India’s accelerating march toward Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in the defense sector. The country is not only reducing dependency on imports but also emerging as a hub for advanced military innovation, technology, and production.
