According to official sources, the Indian Army is considering the inclusion of women cadres in select Territorial Army battalions as part of a pilot project. If approved, this would be the first time women will wear the Territorial Army uniform and serve alongside male personnel in this unique volunteer-based defence force.

Historic Shift: Pilot Project to Begin with Limited Battalions

Sources confirmed on Sunday that the induction of women will initially be restricted to a few battalions, allowing the Army to assess operational requirements, training needs, and overall feedback. The Territorial Army (TA) is a unique military organization based on the principle of “citizen soldiers.” It allows able-bodied Indian volunteers—especially those who exceed the age limit for regular Army enlistment—to serve the nation in uniform while continuing their civilian professions.
