Tamil Nadu government wrote a letter to eight states in protest against the draft Ports Bill, requesting them to file an objection.
The Tamil Nadu government has opposed the draft Indian Ports Bill 2021.
Chief Minister MK Stalin has written to the chief ministers of eight states, including Bengal and Kerala, urging them to register their objection to the proposal.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways have prepared a draft bill to revise the management model of small ports.
A meeting of the Maritime State Development Council (MSDC) has been called on June 24 to discuss this with the Ministers of State.
As per the existing Indian Ports Act 1908, the power of planning, development, regulation, and control of minor ports rest with the concerned State Government.
But the latest draft proposes to change this and many powers will be transferred to MSDC. As of now, MSDC is an advisory body.

In a letter sent to the Chief Ministers of Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Bengal, and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
Stalin said, “In addition, at present, many existing powers of the state governments will be taken over by the central government.”
You would agree that the present system has played a role in the development of small ports under the State Governments.
This move of the central government to introduce a new bill will have a long-term adverse impact on the management of small ports. If the bill is passed, the state governments will have no major role to play.
Kerala High Court stayed the orders of Lakshadweep administration to change the diet of children from the midday meal.
The Kerala HC on Tuesday stayed two orders of the Lakshadweep administration shutting down dairy farms and changing the diet of children by eliminating meat, including chicken, from the midday meal.
The stay order was given by the Division Bench of Chief Justice S Manikumar and Justice Shaji P while hearing a PIL.
High Court said – orders should not be implemented till the counter affidavit is filed.
The court said that these orders should not be implemented till the counter affidavit is filed by the administration.
Petitioner Ajmal Ahmed has alleged that the order has been passed with malicious intent to change the eating habits of the residents of the island.
Slaughter of cattle and consumption of beef products banned.
According to the petitioner, this order is a prelude to the implementation of the Animal Protection (Regulation), 2021, which deals with banning the slaughter of cattle and consumption of beef products.
Local dairy farms ordered to be closed to promote Gujarati dairy products.
The petitioner has submitted that the order for closure of local dairy farms has also been made for the purpose of promoting one of the dairy products of Gujarat.
