Road and college to be named after Kashmiri Pandits in Kashmir. For the first time in 30 years, roads and colleges in the name of Pandits in Kashmir.

The road leading from Zero Bridge to Bakshi Stadium in the summer capital Srinagar will now be known as Zinda Kaul Marg.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to rename this road in honor of Zinda Kaul, the first Kashmiri poet to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award.

The common Kashmiri knows Jinda Kaul as Masterji. Not only this but preparations have also been made to name some colleges and schools after the eminent litterateurs and educationists of Kashmir.

These include Late Motilal Kemmu, Late Prof. Hamid Kashmiri, and Late Prof Riyaz Punjabi.

This is the first time in the last 30 years that a college or a street is being named after a Kashmiri Pandit in Kashmir.

The naming of streets and educational institutions after litterateurs belonging to the Kashmiri Pandit community is being linked with the administrative exercise of making the younger generation of Kashmir aware of the return of Kashmiri Pandits to the valley and their contribution to the socio-cultural life of Kashmir.

Senior officials of the state administration said that at present there is a proposal to name roads and educational institutions in Srinagar itself after four litterateurs and educationists.

These are the persons who have played a remarkable role in strengthening nationalism in Kashmir by contributing to the field of education, literature, culture.

Road and college to be named after Kashmiri Pandits: Jinda Kaul was proficient in five languages:

Born in 1884 in Habbakadal, Srinagar, Jinda Kaul not only taught in school but also did not disappoint, if someone came to his house with a desire to study from him.

That’s why he was called Masterji. He used to write in Persian, Hindi, Urdu, Kashmiri, and English.

He wrote his first poem at the age of 12 and recited it at the meeting of the Sanatan Dharma Sabha in Srinagar. He was awarded by the Sahitya Akademi in 1956.

Degree College at Hyderpora is named after actor Kunal Khemu’s grandfather Motilal Khemu.

This degree college is situated just a short distance from the house of the radical Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Motilal Kemmu has written plays like Nagar Udas, Teen Asangati Ekkanki, Lal Daryas Lol Re, Tarunove, Tshai.

He is the grandfather of Bollywood actor Kunal Kemmu. He was honored with the Padma Shri award by the Central Government in 2012. He died in April 2018 in Jammu.

The college will be named in the name of Riyaz Punjabi:

In view of the former Vice-Chancellor of Kashmir University, Padmashree Late Riyaz Punjabi.

In view of his contribution to the promotion of literature, education, and nationalist ideology in Kashmir, Women’s Government College is being named Pro Riyaz Punjabi Mahila Government College.

School to be named after Prof. Hamid Kashmiri:

Boys Higher Secondary School, Rajbagh, will be named after Ghalib and Sahitya Akademi awardee Padmashree, former Vice-Chancellor of Kashmir University, Prof. Hamid Kashmiri.

Born in 1932 in Bohrikadal Srinagar, Prof. Hamid Kashmiri gave a new direction to Urdu poetry and literature in Kashmir.

He also started a course in Urdu Journalism at the University of Kashmir. Prof Hamid Kashmir, the author of about 50 books, received the Padma Shri award in 2010. He died on 27 December 2018.

It is a matter of pride:

Kashmiri litterateur Agnisekhar on the information that the road and college in Srinagar will be named after Jinda Kaul and Motilal Kemmu said that it is a matter of great pride for us.

As a Kashmiri Pandit, as a Kashmiri displaced, I congratulate the Government of Jammu and Kashmir for this work.

It is an honor for the contribution made by the Kashmiri Pandit community to the social, literary, and cultural sphere of Kashmir.
