The Indian Army and Air Force will soon get BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles capable of hitting targets located at a distance of more than 800 km. These state-of-the-art missiles with lethal capability will significantly increase the strength of the defense forces.
Defense sources said that the proposal to acquire about 250 of these missiles has been approved by the Defense Acquisition Council. Now it will be taken to the Cabinet Committee on Security Affairs for final approval.
Will be deployed in high-altitude areas
He said that these missiles will be deployed in deserts and high altitude areas. Earlier the range of these missiles used to be around 300 kilometers, but now their capacity has been increased significantly and they can hit targets up to 800 kilometers.
Sources said that the proposal given by both the armies for BrahMos cruise missiles is a double order of the missiles to be given to the Indian Navy. It is worth noting that Brahmos has been one of the most successful joint ventures in the Indian arms manufacturing industry, even though most of it is manufactured by Russia.
The Indian side is working towards indigenization of key parts of the weapon system and has also achieved success in some areas with the support of private sector industry. With Russian support, this missile is being successfully exported to the Philippines and more countries are showing interest in it.
