IIT Madras Made The First Motorized Wheelchair

IIT Madras made the first motorized wheelchair: Tamil Nadu.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras has developed India’s first indigenous motorized wheelchair vehicle that can be used not only on roads but also on rough terrains.

The indigenous motorized wheelchair named ‘Neobolt’ has a maximum speed of 25 kmph and can travel up to 25 km per charge.

This wheelchair provides more convenience and safety to the users than a car, auto-rickshaw, or scooter.

Throughout the development process, researchers from IIT Madras collaborated extensively with organizations and hospitals dealing with people with locomotor disabilities to create products taking into account their experiences and making continuous design adjustments.

Neobolt was appointed as Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras. Developed by a team led by Sujatha Srinivasan.

It has been commercialized through a startup called ‘Neomotion’. Startup Prof. Sujatha Srinivasan and an IIT Madras alumnus. Swastik Saurav Das is the CEO of Neomotion.

Pro. Sujatha Srinivasan also led the team that developed India’s first indigenously designed standing wheelchair ‘Arise’, which enables a wheelchair user to move from sitting to standing position.

Wheelchair users are usually confined to the four walls of their home, which affects their community participation and their ability to contribute to the economy.

The start-up has also developed ‘Neofly’, a personal wheelchair designed to enhance health and lifestyle.

The NeoFly is the first Indian wheelchair that has been designed according to the users. It offers comfort, convenience, and superior ergonomics.

The motorized attachment gives the Neobolt NeoFly a safety that can navigate any kind of terrain we might normally encounter.

This allows us to drive through unpaved roads or climb a steep slope. It has suspension to withstand jerks on rough roads.
