UN Committee To Review Representation Of Taliban

UN committee to review representation of Taliban: Pleads to approve new envoy.

The UN committee will review Afghanistan’s representation in the United Nations in November.

The General Assembly’s president has said the matter will be decided after the committee presents its findings on who should sit in Kabul’s seat in the world body.

Out of 193 countries, Myanmar and Afghanistan did not get a chance to speak at the recently concluded high-level UNGA.

The Taliban is scrambling to get an international platform. It has named its spokesman Suhail Shaheen as Afghanistan’s new envoy to the UN.

But he has not been accepted as the representative of Afghanistan. Shaheen has again urged the United Nations to allow him to represent Afghanistan on this international forum.

Shaheen has said in his request to the UN that envoys appointed by the previous government of Afghanistan cannot represent the country. Because this government no longer exists.

Ghulam Isakzai was Afghanistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations during the previous Afghan government.

Ashraf Ghani, who fled the country after the Taliban took control of Kabul on August 15, appointed Isakzai as Kabul’s envoy to the United Nations in June 2021.

He was also listed to speak for the country on the last day of the high-level 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly on 27 September. However, Isakzai withdrew his participation.

Earlier, the Taliban had requested to allow their envoy to participate in the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

For this, the Taliban wrote a letter to UN chief Antonio Guterres. However, the Taliban envoy was not allowed to participate in the General Assembly session that lasted from 21 to 27 September.

Pakistan had also campaigned in the United Nations to give a chance to the Taliban envoy, but it was unsuccessful. Let us tell you that no country has yet recognized the Taliban government of Afghanistan.
