Uighur Muslims in China: Chinese government tried to silence Megha, Chinese government canceled visa. Indian-origin journalist Megha Rajagopalan has won the Pulitzer Award.
She exposed the truth of China’s detention centers to the world. Millions of Uighur Muslims are imprisoned in these centers built in the Xinjiang province of China.
Apart from Megha, Neil Bedi of Indian origin has also been honored with this prestigious award.
Visa was canceled by the Chinese government.
Internet media Buzzfeed News reported that Megha had visited a detention center for the first time in 2017 after China denied having such a place.
The government there had tried to silence Megha. Her visa was canceled and she was deported from the country.
However, Megha, who works from London, refused to remain silent and worked to bring the truth of China to the world.
After winning the award, Megha said, ‘I had no hope of winning the award. I am grateful to my colleagues. Megha has won this award in the International Reporting category.
She, along with two aides, revealed through satellite photographs how China has kept millions of Uighurs in detention centers. Megha shared the award with two colleagues from BuzzFeed News.
Indian-origin Neil also won the award.
Indian-origin Neil Bedi did investigative reporting on an initiative by authorities in Florida, the US, to use computer-based models to identify people suspected of committing a crime in the future.
Bedi is an investigative journalist for the Tampa Bay Times. Bedi along with Kathleen McGrory won the award in the local category.
Pulitzer to Reuters and New York Times.
Reuters, The New York Times, The Atlantic, and The Minneapolis Star Tribune also received the Pulitzer Prize for their reporting on the Corona pandemic and racial inequality in US police.
The awards were announced on Friday. The award was presented to The Minneapolis Star Tribune for its coverage of the police killing of black man George Floyd in the US in May last year.

Awards are given every year in 21 categories. Each winner is given 15 thousand dollars (about Rs 11 lakh) along with a certificate.
