The Telangana High Court Strict Against App-Based Lenders

The Telangana High Court gives instructions to take action against app-based lenders.

The Telangana High Court has directed the police to take necessary action against those who harass the borrowers for recovery by providing immediate loans at high-interest rates through the app.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Hima Kohli, hearing the plea of advocate Kalyan Dilip Sunkara, on Thursday directed the Director-General of Police to ensure that such apps are either blocked or removed from the Google Play store.

The court also directed the police to arrest those running such apps. While hearing the next hearing on March 18, the police have also been asked to submit a status report on the action taken in this case.

The police told the court that the lending companies give loans at a high-interest rate through the instant loan app and also charge a hefty amount as a processing charge.

They then misbehave with the non-debtors and are threatened. Six reports of suicides were recorded in December 2020 due to such harassment in Telangana.

More than 50 cases have been registered against 30 people in these cases. So far four Chinese citizens have also been arrested. The Enforcement Directorate is also investigating these cases.
