Thalaivii Review: Kangana’s Acting Is Impressive

Thalaivii Review: Kangana’s impressive acting won the heart, effective dialogues made the film the best.

The film ‘Thalaivi’, based on the life of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, has been released in theatres. The film is directed by Vijay.

Released in three languages, the film begins with an incident inside the assembly where the leader of Karunanidhi’s (Nassar) party insults Jayalalithaa (Kangana Ranaut) by pulling her sari in a crowded gathering.

She swears that now she will return to the assembly only as a chief minister.

From there the story goes back to the past when young Jaya aka Jayalalithaa is tried by her mother Sandhya (Bhagyashree) to make her the top heroine.

Jaya gets a film with superstar MGR (Arvind Swamy). The pairing of Jaya and MGR becomes a hit. Both also get attached to each other. MGR quits acting and becomes active in politics.

After leaving Karunanidhi’s party, he forms his own party and becomes the Chief Minister. He turns away from Jaya to perform the duty of a politician.

There comes a time when Jaya joins MGR’s party as a propaganda secretary. From there, Jaya’s political journey begins.

As in most biopics, only the positive aspects are put forward. This film is also no exception. There is no mention of any controversies related to Jayalalithaa in the film.

The episodes making them Amma and Thalaivi have been kept more. In the first half of the film, the story seems more of MGR than Jayalalithaa.

The focus is more on her film career and her relationship with MGR, but the story picks up pace after the interval as Jayalalithaa moves towards becoming a politician.

Director Vijay has worked closely in every scene.

Amidst the male domination of the film industry and politics, Vijay has been able to show on screen how hard a woman has to work to prove herself and fight for her self-respect.

Set in the sixth and seventh decades of the last century, the set environment is properly crafted for the story.

Fashion designer Neeta Lulla has brought the fashion of that era to life. Kangana’s acting is impressive.

She has portrayed the humiliation of a woman in a crowded gathering, the feeling of selfless love for her mentor, guide MGR, the heroine style of that era, and the passion to become a politician.

Thalaivii Review: The share of Jayalalithaa’s increased weight is small in the film, but Kangana impresses in that too.

Arvind Swami also managed to portray the influential personality of MGR. The most interesting character of the film was that of Raj Arjun.

In the role of RMV, close to MGR, Raj adapted several scenes as his own. Nassar is fine in the small role of Karunanidhi.

Bhagyashree’s work in the role of mother is good. There is no special scene on Madhu’s part.  The movie has impressive dialogues

Lead Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Arvind Swamy, Raj Arjun, Bhagyashree.

Director: Vijay    Duration: Two hours 33 minutes.
