Sri Lanka Made The Highest Score Of Test Cricket Against India

Sri Lanka made the highest score of Test cricket against India, to date is a world record. The Indian team toured Sri Lanka in August 1997. The first two-match Test series was played between the two countries at that time and then the ODI series.

History was created in the first match of the Test series, which is a world record to date. The host Sri Lankan team had the highest score in an innings of a Test match against India in the first match of the series.

Although the result of that match was a draw, the world record is still remembered today. In fact, the first match of the two-match Test series began on 2 August 1997 between the Indian team captained by Sachin Tendulkar and Sri Lanka.

In the match played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, winning the toss and batting first, the Indian team, batting 167.3 overs, scored 537 runs at the loss of 8 wickets and declared the innings. In the last session of the second day of the match, India invited Sri Lanka to bat.

For India, captain Sachin Tendulkar scored 143 runs, Mohammad Azharuddin scored 126 runs and Navjot Sidhu’s 111 runs in this match for India. Rahul Dravid also hit a half-century.

It was believed that the Indian team would have a heavy upper hand in this match, but it did not happen. The Sri Lankan team had a score of over 500 runs in front. In such a situation, Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu went on to open, but Attapattu was dismissed by 26 runs.

Sri Lanka got the first blow on the score of just 39 runs. In such a situation, the Indian team must have gained confidence, but after this Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama carried forward the Sri Lankan innings.

Both shared a half-century, then a century and then a 200-run partnership. Meanwhile, Jayasuriya completed his century and after a while, Mahanama also completed his century. After this, there was a continuous partnership between the two, and the Sri Lankan team beat India’s score.

The Sri Lankan team’s score was over 600 runs. At this time, Roshan Mahanama was dismissed by 225 runs. The team’s score at this time was 615 runs. Thus, a total of 576 runs were shared between the two.

After Mahanama’s dismissal, Sanath Jayasuriya was also dismissed on this score. Jayasuriya scored 340 runs in this match. After his dismissal, Arvinda DeSilva partnered first with captain Arjun Ranatunga and then Mahela Jayawardene.

The Sri Lankan team played a total of 271 overs in this match and scored 952 runs, losing 6 wickets before announcing the innings on 6 August 1997, which is a world record to date.

So far no team has scored such a big score in an innings of a Test match. However, earlier in the year 1932, England team had scored 903 runs against Australia, but for the first time in Test cricket, a team scored more than 950.
