The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Maharashtra Police to file a second supplementary charge sheet in the Palghar murder case of sadhus in Maharashtra’s Palghar.
The hearing of the case has been postponed for two weeks by the honorable SC. Significantly, on April 16 last year, two sadhus were beaten to death in Palghar.
Both these sadhus were going to Surat city in Gujarat to attend the funeral of their guru. People killed by labeling them as child thieves. A petition has been filed seeking a Central Investigation Agency (CBI) inquiry into the matter.
The petition calls for the police to file an FIR against the police officers for their alleged failure to stop the mob from gathering during the lockdown.
Counsel for the Maharashtra government told a bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and RS Reddy that a second supplementary charge sheet has been filed in the case.
The bench said that a fresh charge sheet should be kept on record in two weeks before it and after that the case will be heard further.
On September 7 last year, the Maharashtra Police informed the Supreme Court that convicted police officers have been punished or suspended.
The Supreme Court had on August 6 last year asked the Maharashtra Police to apprise them of the investigation and action taken against the policemen convicted in the case.
The Maharashtra Police had said that 18 convicted policemen have been given different punishments.
Some of these have been dismissed from service and some are essentially retired. The salaries of some have also been cut.
The Maharashtra Police informed the court that the State Criminal Investigation Department has so far filed two charge sheets in the case.
On June 11 last year, the Supreme Court sought answers from the state government on two petitions for separate investigations by the CBI and the NIA.
The bench was hearing petitions filed by the saints’ relatives and saints of Juna Arena. His petition alleged that the state police were being investigated in a biased manner.
A petition has been filed by advocate Ghanshyam Upadhyay seeking a probe from the NIA into the incident.

During the last Corona lockdown on April 16, two sadhus, 70-year-old Chicane Maharaj Kalpvrikshgiri and 35-year-old Sushilgiri Maharaj and their driver Nilesh Telagade were murdered and killed as a child thief in Gadchinchale, Palghar district.
Both sadhus were going to Gujarat to attend a funeral. According to police, the rumor was spread about the child thief gang where this incident took place. The villagers became suspicious of them and attacked them.
