Russian Plane Fired A Missile Near British Spy Plane

Russian plane fired a missile near British spy plane over the Black Sea – Defense Minister Ben Wallace.

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said the incident happened on September 29 and Russia blamed it for a technical fault.

“British aircraft patrols are now accompanying fighter aircraft escorts and allied countries have been informed,” Wallace said.

Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said Thursday that a Russian fighter jet fired a missile at an unarmed British spy plane patrolling international airspace over the Black Sea on September 29.

Wallace told parliament that Russia had attributed the issue to a technical fault and that fighter jet escorts were now accompanying British aircraft.

He said Britain had suspended patrols following the incident and expressed the government’s concern to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

“A reply from the Russian Defense Minister on October 10 stated that he had investigated the circumstances of the incident and stated that it was a technical fault of the Su-27 fighter.”

“He also acknowledged that the incident took place in international airspace.”

He said the patrol now has fighter aircraft escorts. Wallace said the British allies had been informed.

His announcement came the same week that two American fighter jets intercepted two Russian bombers near the US state of Alaska.

“Two US Air Force F-16s intercepted two Russian Tu-95 Bear-Hs entering the Alaska Air Defense Identification Area on October 17,” North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said.

On Monday it detected “two Russian Tu-95 Bear-Hs entering and operating within the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

The command said the Russian planes were intercepted by two US Air Force F-16 fighter jets “that remained in international airspace that did not enter the US or Canadian sovereign airspace.”

NORAD said it does not see Russian activity as a threat or provocation, adding that it regularly monitors the movements of foreign aircraft and, if necessary, moves them out of the ADIZ.
