Rajiv Gandhi assassination: Nalini Sriharan gets parole for one month, Tamil Nadu government tells High Court.
The Tamil Nadu government has decided to grant one month of parole to Nalini Sriharan, who is serving a life sentence in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
The government told the Madras High Court that it had been decided to grant Nalini one month’s parole at the request of her ailing mother.
Let us inform you that Nalini, one of the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, is serving a life sentence in Vellore Jail in Tamil Nadu. She is in jail since 1991.
Her daughter was also born in jail. Along with her, 6 other convicts of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination are also serving their sentence. Among them is Nalini’s husband Murugan.
Nalini was sentenced to death in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, but the Tamil Nadu government commuted her sentence to life imprisonment on 24 April 2000.
Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in a suicide attack by LTTE on 21 May 1991 during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
Talking to the leading news agency, Nalini’s lawyer Radhakrishnan said, she will be released on Friday after completing the parole formalities given by the state government on Thursday.
The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday informed the Madras High Court that Nalini was granted one-month parole by the government following repeated requests from her ailing mother Padma.
Nalini and six others were sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. 14 other people also died in this attack.
