Today is the 136th birth anniversary of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of the country. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was born on December 3, 1884 in Siwan, Bihar.

His father’s name was Mahadev Sahai and mother’s name was Kamleshwari Devi. He had his early education at District School, Chapra, Bihar.

He obtained a master’s degree in law from Patna. Dr. Prasad had a good grasp on Hindi, English, Urdu, Bengali and Persian.

Tenure as President till 1962

Rajendra Prasad is the only President of the country who has served more than once. He held the post of President between 1950-62.

In the year 1962, Rajendra Prasad was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. Rajendra Prasad was a very close associate of Mahatma Gandhi.

He became the first President of India after independence. He also headed the Constituent Assembly. Rajendra Prasad also had to go to jail during the ‘Namak Satyagraha’ and ‘Quit India Movement’.

Deep influence of Guru’s thoughts

The views of his Guru Gopal Krishna Gokhale had a profound influence on Dr. Prasad’s life.

He had also mentioned in his autobiography that he had decided to join the freedom struggle after meeting Gopal Krishna.
