NIA Has Examined 256 Witnesses In Malegaon Blast Case

NIA has examined 256 witnesses so far in the 2008 Malegaon blast case – informed Bombay High Court.

In the 2008 Malegaon blast case, the NIA informed the Bombay High Court that as of 12 July, out of a total of 495 witnesses, 256 witnesses have been examined.

Apart from this, 218 more witnesses will be examined.

A licensed arms dealer, who allegedly sold ammunition to an accused in the Malegaon blasts case in 2008, turned hostile during the hearing on June 29, 2022.

So far 21 witnesses have turned hostile in this case. The witness had allegedly sold ammunition to one of the accused in the case, Lt Col Prasad Purohit.

In his statement given to the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), the witness had claimed that Purohit had come to his arms shop in 2006 to buy ammunition.

Later, the task of investigating the matter was handed over to the National Investigation Tribunal (NIA).

While giving his testimony during the hearing in the court on Wednesday, he retracted his statement given to the investigating agency.

On the night of 29 September 2008, a bike exploded in front of Shakeel Goods Transport Company in Malegaon. In this, six people were killed and 101 people were injured.

According to the police, the bike in which the blast took place was registered in the name of Pragya Thakur, and on this basis, she was arrested in 2008.

The Bombay High Court granted bail to Pragya Thakur in 2017. A case was registered at the Azad Nagar police station in Malegaon on the second day of the blast.

The investigation of the case was handed over to the Maharashtra ATS following the order of the then Maharashtra government as it was linked to terrorism.
