In his condolence message, Foreign Minister Jaishankar recalled his meetings with the deceased President and the Foreign Minister and said that India is with the people of Iran in this hour of grief.

Given the way India-Iran relations were growing during Raisi’s tenure, the simultaneous death of the President and the Foreign Minister is expected to have an immediate impact.

However, there is no possibility of any impact on long-term relationships.

PM Modi has written in his condolence message that the tragic death of Iranian President Dr. Syed Ibrahim Raisi has caused great sorrow and deep shock.

Modi last met Raisi at the BRICS summit held in Johannesburg in September 2023. After this, new momentum was felt in bilateral relations.

The result is an agreement signed in May 2024 for co-management of Chabahar Port, under which the management of a part of this highly strategic port of Iran has been given to the Indian company.

Long-term policy of India and Iran.

There was also discussion between the two leaders on formulating a long-term policy to increase bilateral trade.

Currently, there are US sanctions on Iran due to which India is not able to do business openly with it. Governments on both sides are trying to find a solution to this ban.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, in his condolence message, has expressed deep sorrow and recalled his meetings with both the deceased leaders.

He said his last meeting with President Raisi and Foreign Minister Abdollahian was in January 2024. Then Jaishankar went on a visit to Iran.

Iranian President Raisi planned to visit India in January 2023 but it could not happen at the last moment for some reasons.

But in the previous two years, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar has visited Iran thrice while Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and NSA Ajit Doval visited Iran once each.

India has spent a lot of money on developing Chabahar Port.


Agreements between India and Iran.

In an interview with the media, PM Modi described the Chabahar Port as very important for India’s strategic interests and said that India wishes to establish contact with Afghanistan and the countries of Central Asia through it.

In this regard, PM Modi has termed the recent agreement between India and Iran as a milestone. After Raisi’s death, India will keep an eye on the situation in Iran.

The possibility of some impact on India’s plan to develop Chabahar Port cannot be ruled out.
