The situation was calm but tense in Imphal after the attack on the Manipur Rifles camp, many markets in the city remained closed.

On Wednesday, a mob tried to surround the Manipur Police office complex in Imphal, the capital of Manipur. They were planning to loot weapons.

However, security forces fired several rounds in the air to disperse a large crowd of over 2,000 people.

The situation remained calm in the capital Imphal on Thursday but the atmosphere remained tense.

Several markets remained closed in the city following the incident but educational institutions, government offices, and the Manipur High Court were functioning normally while vehicular movement was seen on the roads After 10 a.m., the curfew was lifted.

Administration deployed additional state and central forces at key junctions and police personnel were seen patrolling the area near the Manipur Rifles camp.

“An attempt by armed miscreants to loot arms and ammunition in the 1st MR battalion yesterday was effectively foiled by the joint security forces,” the state police said on Thursday.

The mob targeted the Manipur Rifles camp near Raj Bhavan and the Chief Minister’s office in Imphal West district on Wednesday.

“Life in the relief camp has been difficult for the last two months since the government cut off supplies,” said Kapthang, a Matupi town resident.

He said, “The state government provided food, ration, water, and other essential items to the people living in the camp, but all this has been stopped since September.”

“We do not know why, but some people say that since the state Refugees from Manipur also came to Mizoram after the ethnic violence, the government here is overburdened and has stopped extending a helping hand. But sometimes, some NGOs send us rations.”
