Former Labor Party Chief Isaac Herzog Became President Of Israel

Former Labor Party chief Isaac Herzog became the 11th President of Israel, Miriam Peretz of nationalist ideology lost.

The 11th President of Israel has been elected. Israel’s parliament on Wednesday elected former center-left politician Isaac Herzog as the country’s president.

It is hoped that this decision will promote unity among ethnic and religious groups. Herzog defeats rival candidate Miriam Peretz, a teacher, and mother of two Israeli army officers who lost their lives in the war.

120 lawmakers cast their vote to elect the new president. During the voting, Herzog got 87 out of 120 votes. At least 61 votes were needed to win.

Peretz got 26 votes. Herzog will assume the presidency next month, succeeding Raven Rivlin, whose seven-year term ends on July 9.

Herzog thanked all the lawmakers who voted for him and said it was an honor to serve the entire people of Israel. Herzog said, ‘I will be the president of all.’

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Herzog on his election as the next President of Israel. He said, ‘I wish them all the best in the name of Israeli citizens.’

Arriving for the first time in parliament in 2003, Herzog, 60, led the Labor Party and held several portfolios in coalition governments.

His most recent public position was as the head of the Jewish Agency for Israel. Let us tell you that this agency works closely with the government to promote immigration to Israel.

At the same time, Peretz, 67, is seen as a more conservative, nationalist candidate.
