The detection of the Covid sub-variant JN.1 in Kerala has heightened concerns, prompting the health department to take immediate action.
Last Saturday, a 79-year-old woman in Kerala tested positive for the new sub-variant, leading to increased vigilance within the health sector.
The India SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), responsible for sequencing and monitoring new and potentially dangerous COVID-19 variants, has conducted investigations in the areas of Kerala where JN.1 has been identified.
INSACOG Chief N.K. Arora informed the media that the JN.1 variant, a sub-variant of BA.2.86, had been isolated and reported in November.
Despite the discovery, he emphasized that there have been no reports of hospitalization or serious illness linked to this variant, as India is actively monitoring the situation.

Rajeev Jayadevan, co-chairman of the National Indian Medical Association Covid Task Force, noted that after a seven-month gap, there has been a rise in cases in India.
Although cases have been reported in Kerala, no severe conditions have been observed thus far.
Jayadevan explained that genome sequencing is essential for understanding the specific virus types prevalent in different regions.
While the April 2023 wave in India was primarily caused by the XBB sublineage, the December genome sequencing results are still pending.
Initial investigations indicate the presence of the JN.1 variant in Kerala.
Highlighting the characteristics of the JN.1 variant, Jayadevan expressed concerns about its rapid spread and its ability to evade immunity.
He noted that JN.1 is a highly immunocompromised variant, posing an immediate impact on individuals previously infected with COVID-19 and those who have been vaccinated.
Furthermore, he pointed out the rapid growth of JN.1 in several Western countries.
As a response to the situation, a mock drill has been ordered in hospitals to ensure preparedness and response efficiency in dealing with the new sub-variant.
