CCPA directed GSK to stop advertising Sensodyne in India. CCPA orders to stop advertising Sensodyne, fined Rs 10 lakh on Naaptol.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has directed GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Consumer Healthcare Limited to stop advertising Sensodyne in India.

This direction has been given to the company in case of violation of advertising rules in India. The CCPA said that the toothpaste in the advertisement is verified by foreign dentists.

The authority has also passed an order against Naaptol Online Shopping Limited for use of misleading advertisements and unfair trade activities in the promotion of its products.

The CCPA has asked Naaptol Online Shopping Limited to pay a fine of Rs 10 lakh.

The Consumer Affairs Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that the CCPA took suo moto cognizance of the matter and passed orders against GSKCH on January 27 and Naaptol on February 2.

As per the order, the CCPA has directed GSKCH to discontinue all advertisements of Sensodyne in the country within 7 days of the issuance of the order as the advertisements depict foreign dentists promoting the products.

The CCPA said GSK Consumer Healthcare “cannot be permitted to show (in advertisements) to foreign dentists in order to circumvent the law in force in India and to exploit consumer apprehensions about tooth sensitivity.”

At the same time, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Consumer Healthcare said, “We confirm that we have received the order from CCPA.

We are looking into this in detail, we would like to clarify that our marketing initiatives are compliant with applicable laws and industry guidelines.”

CCPA  passed an order against Naaptol Online Shopping Ltd, asking the company to stop misleading advertisements of “two gold jewelry sets”, “Magnetic knee support” and “Acupressure yoga slippers”.

Along with this, the CCPA has also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Naaptol.
