Cases of student suicides in Tamil Nadu are increasing at an astonishing rate. On Wednesday, a Class 12 student was found hanging at his house in Karaikudi in the Sivagangai district of the state.

A day earlier, a class 12 student was found dead at her home in Virudhachalam in the Cuddalore district. There have been 5 such incidents in Tamil Nadu within two weeks.

Vinoj, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Karaikudi, told the media that a Class 12 student committed suicide by hanging himself at home in the night.

The case is being investigated. According to the police, the parents of the student had gone to Tiruchendur to offer prayers at the family temple at the time of the incident.

The boy was alone in the house. When the neighbors saw that he did not come out of the house for a long time after coming from school, they informed the family members and the police.

When the police reached the spot, the body of the student was found.

Earlier, a 16-year-old girl was found dead under suspicious circumstances in the hostel premises of a private school in Kallakurichi on July 13, according to a media agency.

The girl’s parents suspected foul play, while the police called it a suicide. After this incident, there was vandalism and arson in the school.

Similar cases were reported in Tiruvallur and Cuddalore districts on July 25, where two class 12 students allegedly committed suicide.

A Class 12 student committed suicide in a hostel attached to a government-aided school in Tiruvallur.

After this, on July 26, a 17-year-old girl, studying in class 11, hanged herself at her house in the Ayyambatti area near Sivakasi.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday expressed grief over these incidents and assured strict action.

He also asked the educational institutions to impart life skills to the youth to bravely tackle the odds.

He said that school-college should take education as a service and not as a business. The Chief Minister had also urged the students to stay away from suicidal thoughts.
