West Bengal Post-poll violence case: CBI inquiry ordered into post-poll violence, a big blow to Mamta government from Calcutta High Court.

West Bengal Post-poll violence case: CBI will investigate the violence after the assembly elections in Bengal.

A five-judge division bench of the Calcutta High Court gave this order while hearing the matter on Thursday.

Apart from this, the SIT will investigate other cases under the supervision of the court. Along with this, the High Court has also directed the state government to pay compensation to the victims.

A larger bench of Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal, Justice Harish Tandon, Justice Indraprasanna Mukherjee, Justice Soumen Sen, and Justice Subrata Talukdar delivered the verdict.

It has been said in the verdict that the investigation of the violence after the elections will be done by the CBI.

The CBI will investigate cases of unnatural death, murder, and other offenses of high importance including rape.

While a three-member bench has been constituted to investigate relatively less important cases.

The inquiry committee will submit its report to the High Court. It will be supervised by retired judges of the Supreme Court.

It is noteworthy that the hearing on several petitions in this regard has been completed in the High Court.

The High Court had on June 18 directed the National Human Rights Commission to constitute a committee to probe the allegations in the case.

The commission submitted its report on 13 July. The report sharply criticized the state government, police, and administration.

In response, the government dismissed the report as false and biased.

A committee set up by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had recommended handing over the investigation of several cases of political violence to the CBI after the poll results.

It is to be known that the commission had constituted a panel to investigate the veracity of the allegations of post-poll violence following the order of the High Court.

After the declaration of the assembly results on May 2, there were incidents of post-poll violence in several cities of West Bengal.
