In view of Taiwan’s increasing tension with China, to strengthen its defense system, the US has announced to give $ 1.1 billion of modern weapons to Taiwan.

This new arms deal with Taiwan has been done in view of the major military exercises started by China after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

There are fears that China’s military exercises could be a trial run for future attacks.

The weapons sold to Taiwan include a deal worth $665 million for an early radar warning system capable of tracking fighter jets and missiles and $355 million for 60 advanced Harpoon missiles.

Due to this the incoming fighter planes and missiles can be detected much earlier. Whereas Harpoon missiles are capable of destroying any target.

The Pentagon said the US State Department has approved the sale of $1.1 billion in military equipment, including 60 anti-ship missiles and 100 air-to-air missiles, to Taiwan.

It is being said that this arms sale order shows strong support for Taiwan from the administration of President Joe Biden.

At present, Taiwan is facing heavy pressure from China. Which has never ruled out using the military to bring the democratically-ruled island under its control.

China continues to claim that Taiwan is part of it. While Taipei says that China has never ruled the island and has no right to claim it.

According to a news agency, the White House said that this summit will be held with the island nations of the Pacific on climate change, response to the epidemic, economic recovery, maritime security, environmental protection, and furthering a free and open Indo-Pacific.

It will advance efforts towards broadening and deepening America’s cooperation on big issues like this.

An official of the Joe Biden administration told that the White House has invited 12 countries of the Pacific, including the Solomon Islands.

The Solomon Islands signed a security deal with China in April, raising Washington’s concerns about Beijing’s growing influence.
