UNSC Resolution 2231, Which Nations Are Scared Of Ending

UNSC Resolution 2231, which Nations is scared of ending, Gulf country and happy Iran. The limit of sanctions imposed on Iran under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 on Iran expired on 18 October 2020.

Many Gulf countries are worried about this. In fact, even before its deadline expired, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), through a letter, supported the Security Council to extend the period of the arms embargo imposed on Iran.

The countries included in this council, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, unitedly requested that the ban period be extended. But now that this deadline has ended by itself, Iran has also announced to expand its plans afresh.

Iran says that it will now also buy and sell weapons. However, in Iran’s declaration, the emphasis has been on selling more than buying weapons.

Let us also tell you here that six countries including Iran from the United States had signed a multilateral Iran nuclear agreement in 2015 which is known as Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA).

However, in the year 2018, President Donald Trump separated America from it. He said that this agreement is not in America’s interest. However, all other countries involved had urged the US not to withdraw from the deal.

A year after this, Iran too withdrew from the deal. Iran has said that the long-standing ban on arms trade against it has come to an end and now it intends to sell more than buying arms.

As far as the UNSC resolution 2231 is concerned, let me tell you that its duration was ten years. The ban was imposed in 2010 on the purchase of large arms on Iran by the UN. The reason for this was Iran’s own nuclear program, which it was not stopping even after several warnings.

In 2019, the UAS Defense Intelligence Agency reported that if these sanctions were not extended, Iran would buy Sukhoi 30 fighter jets, Yak 130 trainer aircraft and T-90 tanks from Russia after its deadline expires.

It also said that it is possible that Iran will also purchase the S-400 air defense system from Russia if the ban deadline is not extended.

At the same time, China can also buy weapons to Iran after the sanctions. The consent of all permanent members of the UN Security Council is necessary to extend the ban on Iran. Let us tell you that Russia and China have been the main arms supplier countries of Iran.

These two countries are also permanent members of the Security Council. This is the reason why the US intention to extend the ban period in UNSC could not work. This is also because of the strength of veto in these two countries.

Let me also point out here that Iran was prohibited from transfer of all types of weapons including both its imports and exports to Iran under the UNSC Resolution 1747, which came into force on 24 March 2007.

In addition, under the UNSC resolution 1929, the supply of arms for war to Iran was banned. It came into force on 9 June 2010. A joint comprehensive action plan was implemented under another UN resolution that provided relief in the arms embargo imposed on Iran.

This resolution, implemented on 17 July 2015, prohibits arms transfers to Iran, including both imports and exports, until 18 October 2020. One of its lists also prohibits Iran from buying or selling fighter jets, tanks and warships, etc.

In addition, Iran is currently prohibited on all equipment used to develop ballistic missiles that make nuclear weapons by October 18, 2023.

After the end of the sanctions period, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has also stated that Iran has the ability to sell weapons, before becoming a buyer in the arms market.

It has been said on behalf of the ministry that Iran is not like the US, whose president is ready to sell deadly weapons for the destruction of the people of Yemen. In the ministry’s statement, this reference was to the weapons that Saudi Arabia has purchased from the US.

Saudi Arabia is leading a military coalition in Yemen fighting against Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

After the end of this embargo, Iran can now buy and sell tanks, armored vehicles, combat aircraft, helicopters and heavy military equipment, while the US says that selling weapons to Iran would still be a violation of UN resolutions and that it had taken any such lane .

Threatened to impose sanctions against those who join the country. China has also shown its attitude against this threat. China says that the US sells arms and interferes with the affairs of other countries.
