UN Mission Indian Women Peacekeepers: India is one of the largest military contributors to UN peacekeeping.

India has become the first country to deploy an all-women contingent for a UN peacekeeping mission.

The Indian contingent, comprising officials and 25 different ranks, will shape a part of an Engagement Platoon and could specialize in Community Outreach.

India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations said in a statement that the platoon of women peacekeepers will be deployed in Abaye on 6 January 2023.

The deployment will be done as part of the Indian battalion in the United Nations Interim Security Force.

This will be India’s largest single contingent of women peacekeepers in a UN mission since the first all-women contingent was deployed in Liberia in 2007, the statement said.

It will also advance India’s intention to significantly increase the number of Indian women in peacekeeping forces.

The Indian contingent comprises two officers and 25 other ranks. The recent escalation of violence in Abyei raises challenging humanitarian concerns for women and children.
