Israel and Hamas in New Talks
From Bloodshed to Breakthrough: On the second anniversary of the Oct 7 assault, Israelis mourn, Gaza faces ongoing bombardment, and peace talks resume under grave stakes and high tensions.
As Israel and Gaza mark the second anniversary of the October 7 assault, indirect peace talks resume in Egypt even as hostilities continue on the ground.
On October 7, 2025, Israelis across the country held memorials and vigils to mark two years since the Hamas-led attack that killed around 1,200 people and triggered a war that continues to ravage Gaza.
In many kibbutzim near the Gaza border, survivors gathered at the wreckage of homes and sites like the Nova music festival to remember the dead and pressure their leaders to secure the release of remaining hostages.
Simultaneously, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, indirect talks resumed between Israel and Hamas under mediation from Egypt, Qatar, and the United States.
The discussions, built around a plan proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, focus on a staged ceasefire, hostage-prisoner exchanges, withdrawal of Israeli forces, and eventual disarmament of Hamas.
But the anniversary was not one of calm. Despite the talks, Israel continued shelling and airstrikes across parts of Gaza, underscoring the challenge of negotiating peace while war persists.
Palestinians in Gaza, already facing dire humanitarian conditions, expressed fear and frustration. The Gaza Health Ministry reports over 67,000 fatalities and more than 168,000 wounded over the course of the war. Within Israel, the anniversary ignited political tensions. Some families of the October 7 victims and bereaved communities criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for failing to secure a ceasefire or bring all hostages home.
However, the national mood is divided: while many stand united in remembrance and demand action, others warn that any deal must safeguard Israel’s security. As talks continue, key hurdles remain. Hamas insists on lifting blockades and guarantees for governance, while Israel demands Hamas’s disarmament and accountability. Whether the anniversary solemnities will catalyze a breakthrough or merely reinforce old impasses, the coming days may determine whether the conflict edges toward negotiation or deeper escalation.
This tenth of October marks not just a symbolic date but a moment of reckoning. The dual narrative of remembrance and diplomacy casts a stark light on how far the war has reached and how tantalizing — yet elusive — peace remains. In a region steeped in sorrow and violence, the hope now rests on whether negotiators can unlock a compromise amid continued fighting.
