DRDO Launches IRSA 1.0 — India’s Breakthrough in Secure Defence Communication

DRDO Launches IRSA 1.0 — DRDO unveils Indian Radio Software Architecture (IRSA 1.0) — a game-changing, indigenous SDR standard. Boosts interoperability and self-reliance in defence comms.

In a landmark stride for national security, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Tuesday officially released the Indian Radio Software Architecture (IRSA). This bold initiative is poised to upgrade India’s defence communications, enabling seamless interoperability across all three armed services, strengthening encryption, and reinforcing India’s push for “Made in India” in critical technologies.

A New Era for Military Communication

The IRSA is a cutting-edge, indigenous software architecture standard tailored for Software Defined Radio (SDR) systems. It defines common interfaces, APIs, execution environments, and waveform portability rules — in effect creating a standardized “software backbone” for SDRs across platforms. Through IRSA, different radio systems can communicate securely, reducing dependency on foreign technology and fortifying India’s strategic autonomy.

DRDO Launches IRSA 1.0 — All Three Services on Board

The Ministry of Defence emphasized that the development of IRSA 1.0 was a tri-service effort, in close collaboration with the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS). The Army, Navy, and Air Force participated in the design consultations to ensure operational alignment across service domains. By embedding uniformity, certification standards, and compliance requirements, IRSA aims to streamline how each service develops and integrates SDR modules.

From Concept to Reality: IRSA’s Journey

The IRSA project was initiated in 2021, following the recognition that SDR is central to modern, resilient military communication. In 2022, DRDO assembled a core technical team, engaging all stakeholders across the services and defence research organizations. After iterative reviews and stakeholder consultations, version 1.0 of IRSA has now been finalized and approved.

This formally adopted standard is India’s first national-level specification for SDR software architecture — shaping the way future military communication systems will be built, certified, and deployed.

Why IRSA Matters — Key Benefits & Impacts

Interoperability & Integration — IRSA ensures that waveforms and radio modules built by different vendors and for different services can interoperate without extensive customization.

Security & Certification — A unified architecture enables standardized certification protocols, tighter security audits, and consistency in meeting encryption and anti-jamming requirements.

Flexibility & Upgradability — With a modular SDR architecture, future enhancements and new waveform modules can be integrated more easily without overhauling entire systems.

Indigenous Capability — By developing IRSA in India, DRDO moves the military communications domain away from foreign dependencies toward self-reliant innovation.

DRDO Launches IRSA 1.0 — The Road Ahead

While IRSA 1.0 marks a major milestone, the architecture is designed to evolve with operational needs. Future versions may incorporate advances such as cognitive radio, dynamic spectrum sharing, and integration with emerging secure network technologies (e.g., 5G/6G hybrid links, satellite mesh networks).

Defense industry players, academic institutions, and private tech firms are expected to adopt and build solutions compliant with IRSA. This opens up new opportunities for India’s defence electronics ecosystem to grow and contribute to the nation’s security infrastructure.

In summary, with the DRDO’s IRSA release, India has taken a bold step toward securing its communication backbone, reinforcing its defense autonomy, and laying the groundwork for modern, interoperable, and future-ready military systems.
