Thailand Open 2021: PV Sindhu and Sameer faced defeat, Satwik-Ashwini upset. Friday was not a good day for the Indian players at the Thailand Open.

While world champion PV Sindhu faced defeat in the quarter-finals in a one-sided match, Sameer Verma was also eliminated from the tournament.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa were also disappointed in the mix doubles. Satwik and Ashwini succeeded India in the mixed doubles and made it to the last four.

PV Sindhu lost in the unilateral quarter-finals of the Toyota Thailand Open Super 1000 Badminton Tournament on Friday, while Sameer Verma lost in a challenging match.

The Indian pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa upset the Malaysian pair of Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh in the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles in a hard-fought three-game match.

Olympic silver medalist Sindhu lost 13-21, 9-21 to local contender Ratchanok Intanon. In the men’s singles, Sameer suffered a close quarterfinal loss to third-ranked Anders Antonsen in the world rankings.

Thailand Open 2021: The Danish player won 21–13, 19–21, 22–20. The Indian challenge in the singles category of the tournament ended with the defeat of Sindhu and Sameer.

In the mixed doubles, the unseeded pair of Satwik and Ashwini won the match 18-21, 24-22, 22-20 after losing the first game against the world number six.

The Indian pair ranked 22nd in the world rankings, will face top-seeded Dutch pair Dachapol Purwarpukroh and Sapasiri Teerthanchai in the semi-finals.

La Liga said in a statement on Friday that Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidan has been found positive for the coronavirus.

Zidan of France quarantined himself earlier this month when he was found positive in a close contact test for the Covid-19 and as a result, he did not even participate in the practice session.

Zidan has been under pressure since his loss to third division team Alcoyano earlier this week. He will not be available for the La Liga match against Allaways on Saturday and his assistant David Betoni will take over.

Real Madrid forward Eden Hazard, midfielder Casemiro and defender Eider Militão were also found positive earlier this season.
