Thailand Open: HS Prannoy Upset Jonathan Christie Despite Pain
Thailand Open: HS Prannoy upset Jonathan Christie despite the pain. Indian badminton player HS Prannoy entered the second round of the Thailand Open Super 1000 tournament, defeating world number seven Jonathan Christie in a three-game hard-fought contest despite the pain in the ribs and a shoulder injury.
After losing the first match, he returned to Shandaav and then won the match by winning two consecutive sets. Prannoy showed great perseverance in this match in the men’s singles and maintained his concentration despite feeling physically uncomfortable.
He returned after missing the first game to win 18-21 21-16 23-21 over Christie in a match that lasted an hour and 15 minutes.
This is Prannoy’s first win over an Indonesian player in the last four attempts. His next match will be against Daren Liyu of Malaysia. Prannoy said after the match, ‘I am proud of my victory. I could not practice for the last few days due to pain. I only wanted to remain on the court and there was no expectation from me.
After the demise of B Sai Praneeth and Kidambi Srikanth, the singles now have an Indian twist on Prannoy and Sameer Verma. Praneeth has been found positive for Covid-19, which also led to Srikanth, who was in a room with him, withdraw from the tournament.
Among other Indians, the men’s doubles pair of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila beat New Zealand’s Oliver Leyden Davis and Abhinav Manota 23-21 21-17 to enter the second round.
However, the women’s doubles pair of N Sikki Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa, however, lost out to Germany’s Linda Efler and Isabel Hertrich 11-21, 19-21.
