Who will launch 5G services in India?

Telecom giants including Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea took part in the mega auction for spectrum that concluded on August 1, where they bid for a combined value of Rs 1.56 lakh crore.

Several previous reports suggest that Airtel and Jio will be at the forefront of launching 5G services in India.

The companies will initially launch 5G in a few cities across the country, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jamnagar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune.

This means that not all users will get access to the 5G service this year.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday conducted raids in different parts of the country in connection with three separate alleged scams.

Interestingly, in all three cases, MPs and ministers of opposition parties have been accused of alleged financial irregularities.

The ED conducted raids in the national capital and 12 other places in connection with the National Herald case.

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi, party leader Rahul Gandhi, and others are accused of violating norms in the National Herald case.

The National Herald case pertains to alleged financial irregularities under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and was registered around 9 months ago.

In 2013 party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy approached the court alleging that the assets of Associated Journals Limited (AJL),  were fraudulently acquired and transferred to Young Indian Pvt Ltd.

Congress leader, Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi held 38-38 percent shares in Young Indian Pvt Ltd.

After Swamy had alleged that the Gandhi family had committed fraud and misappropriation of funds, YIL gained the right to recover Rs 90.25 crore by paying only Rs 50 lakh, which AJL owed Congress.

ED raids at two different locations in Mumbai.

Another case being probed by the agency involves Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, who has been arrested in connection with the Patra Chawl scam. ED raided two different locations in Mumbai.

Sanjay Raut is currently in the custody of the ED in a money laundering case related to irregularities in a Chal redevelopment project in Mumbai’s Goregaon area.

He has been sent to the Enforcement Directorate’s custody till August 4. A case was registered under sections 504, 506, and 509 of IPC at Vakola police station.

An audio clip had gone viral in which Raut was purportedly heard threatening Swapna Patkar.

Significantly, Swapna Patkar Patra is a witness in the Chal land case, in connection with which Raut was taken into custody by the ED.

ED seals a flat in Fort Oasis Apartment in Kolkata.

Another high-profile case involving former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee in which the ED recovered around Rs 50 crore from the house of Arpit Mukherjee, a close aide of the minister.

ED officials on Tuesday sealed a flat at Fort Oasis Apartment in Kolkata, West Bengal, which belongs to one Smita Jhunjhunwala, in connection with the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) scam.

After the arrest of Partha Chatterjee, cash and jewelry worth crores were recovered from the Kolkata residence of Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide of the former education minister.

The ED also disclosed several disproportionate assets, which were alleged to be linked to Chatterjee.

Chatterjee, however, had denied his involvement in the School Service Commission (SSC) scam.

He said “When the time comes, you will know that the money is not mine,” he told media persons.

Arrested Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee, who has now been suspended from the Trinamool Congress, and his aide Arpita Mukherjee are separately claiming that they are “victims of a conspiracy.”

The Trinamool Congress has distanced itself from Chatterjee and suspended him from the party by removing him as a minister.

Need to reduce the number of services exempted from GST: Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj.

Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj on Tuesday said there is a need to reduce the list of products that are exempted from GST.

This is especially necessary for the service sector. Speaking at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event, Bajaj said that the government is trying to plug the loopholes in the GST system in the next two-three years.

He said that the GoM is engaged in rationalizing the GST rates. Bajaj said that there has been a good jump in GST collections in the last financial year.

The GST Council is careful not to pass the burden of increased rates on the common man. The 28 percent tax slab accounts for 16 percent of the total GST collection, he added.

The highest 65 percent revenue comes from the tax slab of 18 percent. The 5 per cent and 12 per cent tax slabs contribute to the revenue of 10 per cent and eight per cent, respectively.
