The issue of alleged illegal tapping of Sumalatha Ambareesh’s telephone during the tenure of HD Kumaraswamy government of Karnataka first came to the fore in 2019.

During the election campaign in March 2019, audio clips of phone conversations of members in her camp were released in the public domain and Sumalatha complained to the Election Commission that she was being kept under telephone surveillance.

After the ouster of the JDS-Congress government in July 2019, a police investigation found that the telephones of several people under the previous government were illegally tapped.
