The Surat court has given its verdict in the ‘Modi Surname Case’. The Surat court has convicted Rahul Gandhi in the case. Surat court sentenced him to 2 years.

However, immediately after this, he was granted bail on a bond of Rs 15,000. In this case, a defamation case was going on against him for the last 4 years.

In fact, in the year 2019, a criminal defamation case was filed against him for commenting on the Modi surname. Earlier, Rahul had reached Surat on Thursday to appear in court.

It may be known that during the Lok Sabha elections 2019, Rahul Gandhi had allegedly said why all the thieves have Modi as their surname.

After this statement, a political storm had arisen across the country. After this, BJP MLA Purnesh Modi filed a case against Rahul Gandhi.

Earlier, last Friday i.e. March 17, the arguments of both sides were completed. Along with this, the court had fixed the date of pronouncing the verdict on 23 March i.e. today.

Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to 2 years: What was the case in which Rahul Gandhi was convicted?

Lok Sabha member from Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi had reached Kolar in Karnataka for campaigning in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

He had allegedly said at a rally, ‘Why do all thieves have the same surname, Modi?’ BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi for this.

He alleged that Rahul has brought down the dignity of the entire Modi community with this comment.

Significantly, Rahul had appeared in court three times during the hearing of this case. Rahul Gandhi appeared before the court for the first time in this matter on 9 July 2020.

When there was a delay in the hearing of the case, Purnesh Modi approached the Gujarat High Court. After this, the High Court directed the lower court in Surat to expedite the hearing.

When he appeared in court for the last time in October 2021, he declared himself innocent during this period.
