President Gotabaya Rajapaksa absconded from Sri Lanka, reached the Maldives, and promised to resign today.

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled from Sri Lanka in the early hours of Wednesday. This information was given by the news agency.

The news agency quoted officials as saying that Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa arrived in the Maldivian capital city of Male.

According to immigration sources, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, his wife, and a bodyguard were among the four passengers on board the Antonov-32 military plane that left the main international airport for neighboring Maldives.

Let us inform you that in the midst of the ongoing crisis in Sri Lanka, the family members of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa are also in the process of leaving the country.

According to Sri Lankan media, Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s brother Basil Rajapaksa was on 12 July trying to leave the country from the Silk Route Departure Terminal at Katunayake Airport.

Meanwhile, immigration officials stopped him, so that he could not escape.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa promised to resign.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa had promised to resign from the presidency on Wednesday. He had said that he was ready to transfer power peacefully.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s younger brother and former finance minister Basil Rajapaksa was also barred from leaving Sri Lanka with his family.

Significantly, the Prime Minister’s Office has said that it will elect a new President of Parliament on July 20.

Sri Lanka’s main opposition party, Samagi Jana Balvegaya, on Monday unanimously decided to nominate Sajith Premadasa for the post of interim president.
