PPP calls Imran’s decision unconstitutional, says – no decision on Senate elections.
Pakistan People’s Party has termed Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s decision to hold Senate elections in February instead of March 2021 as unconstitutional.
The PPP has said that no party has the right to decide when the Senate will be elected.
Pakistani news channel Sama TV quoted PPP leader Raza Rabbani as saying that the government’s decision to hold elections in February is unconstitutional.
He said, ‘No party has the right to decide when the Senate will be elected. The Election Commission is an independent institution and has this right.
Amid political chaos in Pakistan, the federal government has decided to hold Senate elections in February instead of March 2021.
The elections are estimated to result in loss of seats for the opposition Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), which currently controls the Upper House.
The decision was taken on Tuesday during a meeting of the federal cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Dawn report.
PPP Senator Sherry Rehman said that the Parliament had been infamous in just two and a half years. He further said that the government is working contrary to the constitution.
The government wants to implement Mafia Rule on the whole country.
Sama TV further said that Imran Khan is nervous after the Lahore rally, which is why he is trying to change the election schedule.
Fearing the growing popularity of the PDM, the Imran Khan government has registered a case against the central leadership of the PDM following the Minar-e-Pakistan procession on Sunday.
PDM is holding rallies to remove the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government by 31 January.
According to Geo News, PML-N vice-president Maryam Nawaz and PML-N leaders Khwaja Saad Rafiq, Ahsan Iqbal and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi have been named in the case.
Apart from this, other opposition leaders including Rana Sanaullah and Maryam Aurangzeb are also named.
