India Ranks 131 In The Human Development Index

India ranks 131 in the Human Development Index and Pakistan 154, we are ahead in Solar Energy.

India ranks 131 in the Human Development Index (HDI), has slipped two points from last year, released by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Last year, our country was ranked number 129.

However, the UNDP says that India’s slipping in the list does not necessarily mean that there is no work being done, but rather that other countries have done better.

What is HDI

The Human Development Index measures the standard of living of a country. It also looks at the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country and the level of health and education available.

Life expectancy

According to the Human Development Report 2020, the life expectancy of Indians born in 2019 is estimated at 69.7 years, while in Bangladesh it is 72.7 years.

Neighboring Pakistan lagged behind in terms of life expectancy. Life expectancy there was estimated at 67.3 years.

Medium human development

Along with India, Bhutan (129), Bangladesh (133), Nepal (142), Pakistan (154) etc. were included in the countries with moderate human development category. India ranked 130 in this list in the year 2018.

189 countries involved in ranking

189 countries were included in the Human Development Index. India’s HDI value stood at 0.645.

Due to this, India had to join the category of countries with moderate human development and slipped two points to 131.

Norway on top

According to the report, Norway topped the Human Development Index, while Ireland, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Iceland ranked second, third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Income reduction and malnutrition

The report released on Tuesday by the UNDP states that the per capita income in India during the year 2018 was US $ 6,829 i.e. around five lakh rupees, based on purchasing power parity (PPP). In the year 2019, it came down to $ 6,681 i.e. 4.91 lakhs.

PPP is a measure of the prices of different countries. In this, the prices of a particular commodity are compared, so that the real ability of the currency of the countries can be determined.

Malnutrition has also emerged as a major problem in children of origin in Cambodia, India and Thailand, due to which the children of these countries are reduced in length.

The report also raised concerns over the difference being made between parents in son and daughter in terms of nutritious food.

Land and Women Safety

The report states that evidence from Colombia to India shows that financial security and land ownership have improved women’s security.

It has also reduced sexual violence. It is clear that women have been empowered by the purchase of land.

India ranked fifth in solar energy

India has decided to reduce carbon emissions by 30-35 per cent by the year 2005 by 2030 under the Paris Agreement.

There has been rapid work in the field of solar energy in the country. 2.6 GW of solar power was produced in April 2014, which has already increased to 30 GW by July 2019.

Thus, it has achieved the target of 20 gigawatt capacity four years ago. India ranks fifth on the list of countries that have achieved solar energy potential.

PHDI

A new index called PHDI has also been added to the report this time among corona infections.

Transparency of HDI has been retained in Planetary Pressure-Adjusted HDI (PHDI). UNDP officials say that the carbon emissions being done by a country are also mentioned in PhDI.

India’s commitment towards reducing carbon emissions is commendable. It can also help other countries. Shoko Noda, Local Representative (UNDP)
