The biggest nuclear deal between PM Modi and Trump, the US will install several reactors one after the other in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completed his two-day US visit on 14 February. This was the first time PM Modi visited America after Donald Trump became the President of America for the second time.
On the last day of his visit, PM Modi met US President Donald Trump. Many issues were discussed between the two leaders. Many agreements were also reached between the two countries on many issues including trade, the energy sector, and nuclear reactors. A joint PC was also held after the meeting of the two leaders.

Keeping energy security in mind during the US visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump have reaffirmed their belief in nuclear energy. In fact, after the talks between the two leaders at the White House on Thursday, they reiterated their commitment to work together on US-designed nuclear reactors in India through large-scale localization and possible technology transfer.

Let us inform you that historic civil nuclear agreements were signed between India and America in 2008. There has been no progress in the talks since then. No new American nuclear reactor has reached Indian soil in the 21st century. Now to end the deadlock between the two countries, both the leaders have now shown interest not only in building large reactors but also in building advanced small modular reactors in India.
America preparing to install reactors in India
Let us tell you that the Government of India and Westinghouse are also discussing the project of building six 1,000 MW nuclear reactors in Kovvada, Andhra Pradesh. At the same time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have also talked about giving the design and reactor to India by America and building reactors in India by transferring technology.
What did PM Modi say?
During the joint briefing, PM Modi and Trump welcomed the announcements of Budget 2025 to amend the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act (CLNDA) for nuclear reactors.
According to this statement, it was also decided to establish a bilateral arrangement by the CLNDA, which will address the issue of civil liability and facilitate cooperation between Indian and US industry in the creation and organization of atomic reactors.

PM Modi also met with US Security Advisor Michael Waltz on Thursday. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed industrial cooperation and civil nuclear energy, with an emphasis on small modular reactors.
What did the Indian Foreign Secretary say?
After the end of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that an agreement has been reached between the two countries to realize the possibilities in civilian nuclear energy, build US-designed nuclear reactors in India, and take this process forward through large-scale localization as well as technology transfer.
The Foreign Secretary said that the two countries have been discussing cooperation in small modular reactors for some time and it was discussed again today. The obstacles in realizing this cooperation due to some legal provisions existing in India in the past years have already started to be removed.

It is worth noting that on February 1, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the ‘Nuclear Energy Mission for Developed India’. Just after this announcement, there has been a discussion between India and America about the field of nuclear energy. The development of at least 100 gigawatts of nuclear power by 2047 is “essential to our energy transition efforts,” Nirmala Sitharaman stated during her speech.
