Kathmandu, Nepal – The ongoing Gen Z protest in Nepal has spiraled into extreme violence, leaving 22 people dead so far. The unrest, which erupted after the Nepal government banned social media platforms, has shaken the nation.

According to reports, enraged protesters in Kathmandu chased and assaulted Finance Minister Vishnu Prasad Poudel on the streets, while the residence of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was set ablaze. In a shocking incident, former Prime Minister Jhalanath’s wife Rajlakshmi, was burnt alive after protesters torched their house.

Social Media Ban Sparks Outrage

The protests began on Monday when the government banned 26 unregistered social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, and X (Twitter), while sparing TikTok. The move triggered massive anger among the youth, who accused leaders of corruption and censorship.

Viral TikTok videos comparing the struggles of ordinary Nepali youth with the lavish lifestyles of politicians’ children further fueled the protests, intensifying the movement across the country.

One viral video shows 65-year-old Finance Minister Poudel running to escape protesters, only to be kicked and thrown against a wall before fleeing again. The visuals have spread rapidly across social media platforms, becoming a symbol of the government’s vulnerability.

PM Oli Resigns Amid Chaos

On Friday, the Nepal government banned 26 unregistered social media platforms and shut down social media sites like Facebook, YouTube, and X. However, TikTok has not been shut down.

During this time, videos went viral on TikTok in which the difficult life of common Nepali youth was compared with the luxurious lifestyle of the children of leaders. These videos added fuel to the fire, and the movement gained momentum.
