Kathmandu (Agency): In a major crackdown, the Government of Nepal has banned 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology announced that the ban will be enforced nationwide after these platforms failed to comply with the mandatory registration order issued by the Nepal Telecommunication Authority.
According to reports, Nepal had earlier given a 7-day ultimatum for all social media companies—domestic or foreign—to register in the country. Despite repeated warnings, tech giants like Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), YouTube, and X did not initiate the process, leading to an immediate nationwide ban.

The Supreme Court of Nepal had earlier directed the government to regulate and monitor unwanted online content by enforcing mandatory listing of all platforms. Following this, the cabinet issued strict guidelines and an ultimatum.

Government’s Stand
Communications and IT Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung chaired the crucial meeting attended by ministry officials, telecom operators, and internet service providers. The consensus was clear: unregistered platforms cannot operate in Nepal.
The decision has sparked a wave of debate both nationally and internationally, with questions being raised about the impact on freedom of speech, the digital economy, and millions of daily users who rely on these platforms.
