The Modi government had made a provision of Rs 61,500 crore for the MNREGA in the budget for the financial year 2020-21. This was 13 percent less than the previous financial year 2019-20.
Its total estimated expenditure in FY 2019-20 was Rs 71,001.81 crore. However, an additional Rs 40,000 crore was allocated after the lockdown. This increased its total amount to Rs one lakh crore.
This was the second consecutive year when the MNREGA scheme received a low budgetary allocation. The government spent Rs 61,000 crore on the scheme during FY19. The budgetary allocation for FY20 was Rs 60,000.
During the period 2015–19, budgetary allocation for MNREGA increased. It increased from Rs 34,000 crore in FY15 to Rs 61,084 crore in FY19.
The actual expenditure in all years has been higher than the approved budgetary allocation since then, except for FY15.
MGNREGA proved to be very helpful in providing employment to workers migrating from cities during the Corona period.
It played an important role in providing basic employment to the daily wage laborers as well as developing basic amenities in the villages.
In such a situation, it is believed that there may be an increase in the budget of rural development schemes including MNREGA.
