India lost Rs 13.6 lakh crore due to sharing of 5G bands: SAI expressed concern. 5G spectrum is to be auctioned and allotted in India this year.

But before this, the Satcom Industry Association (SIA-India) expressed concern that the sharing of satellite bands for the upcoming 5G auction would cost India $ 184.6 billion (about Rs 13.6 lakh crore).

This means Indian citizens will not get high-demand, advanced satellite broadband service. At the same time, the country will suffer a huge loss to the Indian economy annually.

According to the report, India will suffer a loss of about Rs 13.6 lakh crore to India’s GDP by the year 2030.

Rational plans should be made for the allocation of the spectrum at the international level. So that spectrum can be auctioned according to the need.

This may be a best practice for optimum utilization of spectrum. The scheme of the auction of spectrum bands should be worked out keeping the balance of spectrum supply and demand.

SIA-India Director General Anil Prakash said that the 5G spectrum can be auctioned by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in March 2022.

Meaning if things go according to plan, then a 5G auction can happen in the country in July-August.

According to SIA-India, the impact of the loss of the C-band spectrum in the 3.6-3.67 GHz band alone will be felt across the country. Satellite broadband is already being used.

In such a situation, SIA-India has urged to limit the mm-wave spectrum in the 5G/IMT auction to 24.25-27.5 GHz spectrum internationally.

The three private mobile network operators (MNOs) together account for 90 percent of the market. 80-90 MHz will be reserved, leaving 30-60 MHz for each of them state-owned MNOs.
