Solid Waste Management Rules-2016

In April 2016, the law was enacted in place of the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000 after 16 years. Under the new rules, the scope of waste management was also extended beyond the municipal corporations.

These rules are now based on urban agglomerations, census towns, notified industrial townships, areas controlled by Indian Railways, airports, airbases, ports, defense establishments, special economic zones, organizations of central and state governments, pilgrimage sites and religious and historical significance.

A Central Monitoring Committee was also constituted under the chairmanship of the Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for overall monitoring of these rules.
