GOI banned export of flour, maida, and semolina, and steps were taken to control rising prices.
The central government has banned the export of flour, wholemeal flour, maida, and semolina. This has been done to check the rising prices of these products.
According to a release issued by the government, the export of wheat or meslin flour, maida, wholemeal flour, and semolina is prohibited for free. Sooji also includes Rava and Sirgi.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade has issued this order on behalf of the government. However, with the permission of the government, export can now be done in some cases.
It has been said in the issued order that the provisions regarding transitional arrangements of Foreign Trade Policy 2015-20 will not be applicable under this notification.
Let us tell you that earlier on August 25, the government had decided to ban the export of wheat. The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA).
GOI banned the export of flour: Why had to stop the export of wheat?
Actually, Russia and Ukraine war became the reason for this. The two countries are the largest exporters of wheat and the war between them disrupted the supply of wheat worldwide.
Hence the demand for wheat exports from India increased. Due to the increase in exports, the price of wheat started going up in India, and exports were banned to curb this.
However, this accelerated the demand for flour abroad. From April-July this year, the demand for flour saw a jump of 200 percent over the same period last year.
India exported flour worth $246 million in 2021-22. Whereas in this financial year only in April-July, flour worth $ 128 million was exported.
Prices up to 22 percent.
According to a report by Mint, due to the reduced supply of wheat and an increase in demand, its retail price in the country on 22 August 2022 saw a jump of 22 percent compared to the same period last year.
On August 22, wheat was selling at Rs 31.04 per kg in the retail market as against Rs 25.41 in the previous August.
At the same time, there was an increase of 17 percent in the price of flour during this period.
