Facebook may turn off the Nearby Fans feature and weather alerts.

Facebook’s Nearby Friends feature that lets people share their current location with other Facebook users will no longer be available starting May 31 this year.

According to user reports on social media platforms, the Meta-owned company has started notifying users about the closure of Nearby Friends and other location-based features.

This feature allows users to track their friend’s real-time location. Once enabled, users will be notified when their friends are in close range of their current location.

Along with Facebook Nearby Friends, Facebook is also turning off weather alerts, location history, and background location.

Several user posts on Twitter have revealed that Facebook has reportedly announced the closure of the Nearby Friends feature through a notification on the Facebook app.

In a notification sent to the users, the company said that this facility will no longer be available from May 31, 2022.

This feature helps users to find out which friends are nearby or on the go.

Other location-based functions, including weather alerts, location history, and background location, are also disappearing from the platform.

Facebook may turn off the Nearby Fans feature: The company has given users till August 1 this year to download their data including location history. After which it will be removed.

However, Facebook clarified that it will continue to collect users’ location information for “other experiences”.

Facebook began rolling out the Nearby Friends feature on both iOS and Android in 2014.

Recently, the company reportedly announced its plans to shut down its podcast platform less than a year after its launch. The move is part of a broader reassessment of Facebook’s audio products.

Last year, Facebook launched podcasts and live audio streams in the US to keep users engaged on its platform and compete with emerging competitors.
