England Team Gets Selection Panel Again

England team gets selection panel again, the coach will not be able to handle dual responsibility.

Former England batsman Ian Bell feels that England needs to bring back the traditional selection panel for picking teams, as it will provide a different perspective.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) earlier this year scrapped over a century-long selection panel process. Even the post of the national selector was removed from the England men’s cricket team.

Ed Smith, who held the position for three years, stepped down from the board by resigning in April 2021.

Since then, the responsibility of choosing the national team rests with head coach Chris Silverwood, while captains Joe Root and Eoin Morgan help them choose the playing XI.

At the same time, former batsman Ian Bell wants that the selection process should be changed, as England’s team has become upset against Australia in the Ashes series.

England team gets selection panel again: Ian Bell called for the reinstatement of the selection panel instead of handing over all responsibilities to the head coach.

“One of the hardest things to do, and if I can tell you, to be honest, I was very surprised when we removed the presidency of selectors,” he told Sportsday.

He continued, “Even from a player’s perspective, you’re not so stupid that (Chris Silverwood) isn’t part of the selection.

But since he’s the chief selector, how are you going to have an honest conversation with the head coach? And say, ‘I’m struggling a bit here because he’s the person who is making all the decisions.”

39-year-old Ian Bell, who has played 118 Tests, 161 ODIs, and 8 T20 Internationals for England, feels that someone who is not present in the dressing room and does not interact with players on a daily basis is more suited for the job.
