Pakistan’s economic condition worsens, China asks for additional guarantee for lending

China has sought additional guarantees before lending $ 6 billion (over Rs 44,000 crore) for the railway line project in Pakistan.

It is believed that Beijing has taken this step in view of Pakistan’s poor economic condition.

China has proposed to merge commercial and concessional loans to finance the project, which is against Islamabad’s desire for cheap loans.

The Express Tribune newspaper quoted official documents as saying that the issue of additional guarantees was raised during the third joint ML-1 Financing Committee meeting held ten days ago (13 December).

A senior Pakistani official involved in the talks said that China raised the issue of additional guarantees during the meeting.
