Darbaan Movie Review: Darbaan Looks Forward To Good Content

Darbaan Movie Review: Sharib Hashmi’s ‘Darbaan’ looks forward to good content on OTT.

At the pace that is flooding crime-based shows on OTT platforms these days, the doorman released on Zee 5 is like a cool spray, which gives emotional relief.

The concierge carries forward the tradition of cinema in which Indian literature is viewed through the camera.

Its story is based on the famous story Khokababur Pratibartan by Rabindranath Tagore, the Adipurush of literature, whose Hindi translation is the return of Chhote Babu.

A Bengali film with the same name has been made on this story in 1960, in which Bengali cinema legend Uttam Kumar played the lead role. Sharib Hashmi has got the opportunity to play the same character.

This composition of Darbaan is more than a century old, but the tide of emotions in it is still relevant today.

The concierge tells the story of the relationship between a servant and a master, in which the sense of dedication ends the difference between small and big.

The story of the Darbaan is set in Jharia of Dhanbad district of Bihar (now Jharkhand) in the 1970s. Naren Tripathi (Harsh Chhaya) is the owner of a coal mine.

Raicharan (Sharib Hashmi) is his servant, but like a member of the household. Raicharan, Naren Babu’s teenage son Adhika’s friend, brother and guru, is everything.

Raicharan also gives more than his family to the family and friendly of the owner. The government nationalizes the coal mines, leaving all the business and pride of Naren Babu.

They have to leave their ancestral home and flee.

Raicharan goes back to his village and starts farming. Many years pass.

Suddenly one day Suchit (Sharad Kelkar), who has become a great officer and regained his hereditary wealth and social stature, comes to Raicharan’s house and offers his ‘Raicho’ to come home.

The aging Raicharan arrives and begins an old life in the same mansion with Adhika’s younger son Sidhu, who once spent with Adhik.

One day Raycharan takes Sidhu to turn around, but an accident happens, in which Sidhu goes missing.

Even after searching a lot, there is no evidence of Sidhu being alive. Raicharan had no children of his own. Anukool’s wife (Flora Saini) is already suspicious of him.

After this accident, she falls biffer. However, due to emotional attachment, Fate refuses police action against Rai Charan. The guilt of this accident takes place in Raycharan’s mind.

He returns to the village, but goes back to the previous vivacity. Some time passes.

Raicharan becomes a father, but the misery of believing himself responsible for Sidhu’s death does not allow him to look at the son. Meanwhile, wife Bhuri (Rasika Duggal) also resides.

Raicharan’s sister explains to him, but does not awaken her fascination for the son.

Then one day, Raicharan’s son calls him Channa, by which name, the young Sidhu called him at the first meeting.

It was as if Sidhu got back to Raicharan. He raises his son in the same way as Sidhu. Cut his own expenses and teaches Sidhu in a good school. Fulfills all his demands. Time passes.

Son reaches adolescent stage. The guilt of losing Sidhu still haunts Raicharan. If his son is not taken away by people as Sidhu, fearing that he leaves the village and goes to Gangtok.

But even changing the place does not leave Raycharan’s past. After all, he takes a difficult decision and decides to atone for an accident that happened several years ago.

In terms of performance, Raicharan’s character has many ups and downs on the emotional level, which can tempt an actor.

This character is also decided by a long journey of age, which Sharib Hashmi has lived with success.

His relationship with Supt and then the guilt of losing his son completely changes Raicharan’s personality.

Every happiness and pain of Raicharan is best portrayed by Sharib Hashmi on screen.

The viewer gets connected to Raicharan’s pain through Sharib and can feel that pain.

At the same time, Sharad Kelkar is quite comfortable in the role of Adhikar and his jugalbandi with Sharib seems credible.

Talking about the rest of the cast, Rasika Duggal has not got much time on screen in the role of Rai Charan’s wife Bhuri, but as much as she has got, Rasika did not make her live.

Flora Saini is fine in the role of Adhikari’s wife. However, Flora’s grip in the emotional scenes seems a little weak.

Bipin Nadkarni set the 19th-century story in the 20th century. He has taken the background of the coal mine in place of the Zamindar family.

Technically a lot has changed over the span of a century, which he has used in the story.

The story of the concierge film travels for several decades, but the filming of scenes does not make sense of that journey. Just through the characters, we know that time is moving forward.

The one-and-a-half-hour Darbaan, with a few shortcomings, is a hopeful film that looks forward to good content on OTT.
