Researchers at the National University of Singapore (NUS) said that the test required a person to blow it into a disposable mouthpiece that was attached to a sample collecting machine. It allows accurate detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a person’s breath.

In a statement, the researchers said that after the air comes out of the mouth, it is collected in a spectrometer and it is analyzed through machine learning to find out whether there are elements of corona virus in it.

The special thing is that the machine takes less than a minute to draw its conclusion. The university said in a statement that the new technology was developed by NUS’s start-up Breathonic, which provides a fast and convenient solution for infection detection.

VOC is a marker of diseases

Dr. Jia Junan, CEO of Breathonic, stated, ‘VOCs are continuously excreted by various biochemical reactions in human cells.

There are specific changes due to various types of diseases, as a result of which changes in the breath profile of a person also occur. In this way they can be measured as markers for diseases like corona caused by SARS-COV-2. ‘

New investigation will start on a large scale soon

COO of this startup, Du Fang, said, ‘The mouthpiece of this system consists of a valve and a trap that prevents saliva from entering the air entering the machine. This reduces the chances of spreading the infection to someone else.

According to a report by News Asia Channel, Singapore’s health authorities have embraced the new technology. Through this, three phases are being planned for investigation. It is expected that a large-scale investigation will also begin soon.
