Chinese Defense Minister will go to Russia and Belarus, Li Shangfu visits despite objections from the West.

Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu is on a tour of Russia and Belarus these days. He is making the trip in support of countries the West has sought to isolate over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Li Shangfu left on Monday for a six-day trip during which he will deliver a speech at the International Security Conference in Moscow.

He will meet with defense leaders of Russia and other countries, the Ministry of National Defense said on his social media account, quoting spokesman Col. Ngo Khiem.

100 countries were invited to the conference.

Russia’s official news agency Tass reported that Sergei Lavrov of the Russian Foreign Ministry gave a speech at the conference on the theme ‘the search by most countries of the world for ways of development outside the Western system, including the strengthening of new types of multilateral associations’.

It added that representatives from around 100 countries and eight international organizations have been invited to participate in the conference.

Will visit military facilities of Belarus.

Li’s presence underscores the drive by China and Russia through their foreign policies to undermine the Western-led liberal-democratic world order, despite its economic and reputational costs.

Following that, he traveled to Belarus, a close Russian ally whose territory was used in part for last year’s invasion.

“During his stay, he will hold meetings and talks with the heads of state and the Belarusian military, as well as visit military facilities,” the ministry added.

China claims neutrality in the conflict but has accused the US and its allies of prodding Russia and maintaining strong economic, diplomatic, and trade ties with Moscow.

China will not give weapons to anyone in war.

China has faithfully supported Russia in opposing US condemnation of its invasion of Ukraine in international forums but says it will not arm either side in the war.

Li has been barred from traveling to the US over arms sales with Russia.

Refusal to meet with American counterpart.

Last month too, a pair of Russian Navy ships visited China and held a series of joint exercises.

In contrast to his close ties with Russia, Lee has cut off all contact with his American counterpart, Lloyd Austin.

Recently refused a meeting with him at a forum in Singapore and also refused to take his phone call after the recent shooting of a suspected Chinese spy.
